Art in Our Front Yard: Portland’s Public Art Collection

Celebrate Art in Your Front Yard

the Portland Public Arts Committee (PPAC) is launching Art in Our Front Yard: Portland’s Public Art Collection, a series highlighting the city’s public art collection. In conjunction with First Friday Art Walk, PPAC will feature one of Portland’s public art pieces every month for the next year. A committee member will present a brief talk about the piece, discussing the history of the art work, how it came to be a part of the city’s collection and its place in Portland’s art filled front yard. The discussion series will begin with May’s First Friday Art Walk, May 4th, at 5:30 PM with the Lillian M.N. Stevens Memorial Fountain or Temperance (The Little Water Girl) located in the Portland Public Library.

In April 2000, the City Council established the Portland Public Art Program to preserve, restore and enhance the City’s public art collection. The Portland Public Art Program commissions art that engages with the surrounding environment to create, enrich, or reveal a sense of place, and to express the spirit, values, visions and poetry of place that collectively define Portland.

Currently, the public art collection contains twenty-eight works of art that are permanently installed throughout the city, including works of historical significance dating from the nineteenth century, as well as contemporary pieces that reflect the diversity and the spirit of the city. Recent efforts of the PPAC include redesigning the Pullen Fountain to improve access and protect it from vehicular traffic, accepting the gift of seven steel animal sculptures, Glimpse, for the Portland International Jetport, and restoring and re-plumbing The Little Water Girl for her move to the new foyer at the renovated Portland Public Library. The City Council is also expected to consider two new art initiatives in May, the PPAC recommended design proposal for the Bayside Trail Seating and the gift of a new piece for the public art collection, Tidal Moon by Maine sculptor Jesse Salisbury.

Of the twenty-eight pieces, twelve located within walking distance of the Arts District will be a part of the Art in Our Front Yard: Portland’s Public Art Collection series. Other pieces located outside of the downtown include a number of functional artworks including the Common Ground Gazebo in Payson Park and The Ravine water space in Deering Oaks: The Circle of Life.

The Portland Public Art Committee develops and presents to the City Council an Annual Art Plan that recommends expenditures from the municipal percent-for-art allocation, reviews potential gifts of art to the City’s collection according the Guidelines for the Public Art Ordinance, seeks private donations to care for the public art collection, and recommends appropriate locations for the installation of permanent public art.

The Public Art Fund is supported by a .5% annual appropriation of the total city’s Capital Improvement Program. For more information about the Portland Public Art Committee, visit www.portlandmaine.gov/planning/pubart.asp.

Arbor Day

Arbor Day

When: Always the last Friday in April.

National Arbor Day is the Tree Planter's holiday, and has been celebrated since 1872. It began in Nebraska, a largely treeless plain back in the 1800's. It is a day to plant and dedicate a tree to help nature and the environment. Millions of trees are planted on this day.

The National Arbor Day Foundation provides millions of trees for planting. It is estimated that 18 million tress are planted each year on Arbor Day.

National Drug Take-Back Day

This Friday and Saturday as a part of the US Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take-Back Day, the City of Portland’s Police Department in partnership with the Maine Medical Center, Rite Aid and University of New England and other drug enforcement agencies will host a medication collection drive for medications including vitamins, over-the-counter drugs, prescriptions, and veterinary drugs. The public is encouraged to sort through their medicine cabinet and bring in expired drugs or medications no longer needed or used by the household. The event is designed to raise awareness of proper disposal methods for medications, the risks associated with leaving expired medications in the home and the consequences of disposing of medications improperly by flushing them or throwing them in the trash. If not properly disposed of, these medications could be used illegally or cause accidental poisoning. Additionally, the city’s waste system is not designed to remove pharmaceuticals.

Medications should be brought in their original containers/packages if possible. Individual privacy will be protected by removing any personal information. Labels should not be removed before drop-off as they identify substances/drug classes. Participation is free.

Durable medical equipment, thermometers or needles will not be accepted.

10 home maintenance tips for spring

10 home maintenance tips for spring

By Paul Bianchina Inman News®

The sun is peeking out and the plants are starting to blossom, so it must be about time for spring chores again. Here's my annual spring checklist of important issues to tend to around the house.

1. Roofing repairs: If you suspect winter storms may have damaged your roof, it needs to be inspected. (If you're not comfortable with the height or steepness of your roof, hire a licensed roofing contractor for the inspection.) Look for missing or loose shingles, including ridge-cap shingles.

Examine the condition of the flashings around chimneys, flue pipes, vent caps, and anyplace where the roof and walls intersect. Look for overhanging trees that could damage the roof in a wind storm, as well as buildups of leaves and other debris.

If you have roof damage in a number of areas, or if older shingles makes patching impractical, consider having the entire roof redone. Also, remember that if the shingles have been damaged by wind or by impact from falling tree limbs, the damage may be covered by your homeowners insurance.

2. Check gutters and downspouts: Look for areas where the fasteners may have pulled loose, and for any sags in the gutter run. Also, check for water stains that may indicate joints that have worked loose and are leaking. Clean leaves and debris to be ready for spring and summer rains.

3. Fences and gates: Fence posts are especially susceptible to groundwater saturation, and will loosen up and tilt if the soil around them gets soaked too deeply. Check fence posts in various areas by wiggling them to see how solidly embedded they are.

If any are loose, wait until the surrounding soil has dried out, then excavate around the bottom of the posts and pour additional concrete to stabilize them. Replace any posts that have rotted.

4. Clear yard debris: Inspect landscaping for damage, especially trees. If you see any cracked, leaning or otherwise dangerous conditions with any of your trees, have a licensed, insured tree company inspect and trim or remove them as needed.

Clean up leaves, needles, small limbs and other material that has accumulated. Do any spring pruning that's necessary. Remove and dispose of all dead plant material so it won't become a fire hazard as it dries.

5. Fans and air conditioners: Clean and check the operation of cooling fans, air conditioners and whole-house fans. Shut the power to the fan, remove the cover and wash with mild soapy water, then clean out dust from inside the fan with a shop vacuum -- do not operate the fan with the cover removed.

Check outdoor central air conditioning units for damage or debris buildup, and clean or replace any filters. Check the roof or wall caps where the fan ducts terminate to make sure they are undamaged and well sealed. Check dampers for smooth operation.

6. Check and adjust sprinklers: Run each set of in-ground sprinklers through a cycle, and watch how and where the water is hitting. Adjust or replace any sprinklers that are hitting your siding, washing out loose soil areas, spraying over foundation vents, or in any other way wetting areas on and around your house that shouldn't be getting wet.

7. Check vent blocks and faucet covers: As soon as you're comfortable that the danger of winter freezing is over, remove foundation vent blocks or open vent covers to allow air circulation in the crawl space.

While removing the vent covers, check the grade level around the foundation vents. Winter weather can move soil and create buildups or grade problems that will allow groundwater to drain through the vents into the crawl space, so regrade as necessary. Remove outdoor faucet covers. Turn on the water supply to outdoor faucets if it's been shut off.

8. Prepare yard tools: Replace broken or damaged handles, and clean and condition metal parts. Tighten fittings and fasteners, sharpen cutting tools and mower blades, and service engines and belts in lawn mowers and other power equipment.

9. Change furnace filters: Now is the time to replace furnace filters that have become choked with dust from the winter heating season. This is especially important if you have central air conditioning, or if you utilize your heating system's fan to circulate air during the summer.

10. Check smoke detectors: Daylight Savings Time snuck up early again this year, and that's usually the semi-annual reminder to check your smoke alarms. So if you haven't already done it, now's the time. Replace the batteries, clean the covers, and test the detector's operation before it's too late.

If you have gas-fired appliances in the house, add a carbon monoxide detector as well (or check the operation of your existing one). CO2 detectors are inexpensive and easy to install, and are available at most home centers and other retailers of electrical parts and supplies.

Happy Earth Day

Earth Day (U.S.) April 22.

U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the "Father of Earth Day", initiated and promoted environmental actions and activities beginning in 1962. He convinced then President John F. Kennedy to tour the nation in support of environmental concerns. This initial effort did not spark national concern at a political level to effect change.

But Senator Gaylord continued his pursuit of increased environmental concern and action. He proposed a National Earth day in 1970. It was to be the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda". On April 22, 1970, the timing was right and the first Earth Day protest received astounding support.

Have you heard of or tried Daily Feats?

There's a new website and app out right now called "Daily Feats," and it's designed to not only help you "do good" in the world (for yourself and others), but also integrates a reward component.

From the website: "DailyFeats helps you check in, share, and get inspired with every small step. At DailyFeats, reach your goals through 'feats': small, positive, daily steps toward your goal. As you do those feats, you'll track your progress, get reminders, share inspiration, encourage friends, and earn points to redeem for donations to nonprofits or savings from national brands. Yes: we reward you for doing good things!"

The basic premise? You set goals, "do feats" and celebrate your accomplishments along the way.

While the iPhone app is the most prominent mobile component of the Daily Feats project, there are other ways to keep up with your feats on a variety of platforms. The social component of Daily Feats is obviously a big part of keeping you motivated.

Check out Daily Feats today: http://www.dailyfeats.com/

To Rid Your Garden of Weeds, Focus on the Seeds

Every garden is filled with them: millions of unseen weeds. They are dormant seeds that lurk just below the soil surface, ready to spring to life with just the briefest exposure to light. Weeds can choke a garden, robbing it of space, nutrients and water. Allowing weeds to mature compounds the problem, as they are naturally prolific seed producers. They grow aggressively and can be tough to get rid of, because pulling weeds brings more weed seeds to the surface.

The good news is that seeds can also be key to winning the war on garden weeds.

To break the weeding cycle, the experts at Preen suggest a strategic approach that stops weeds before they start, by preventing their seeds from germinating in the first place.

"If weeds don't grow, you don't have to pull them," says Preen's Maryanne Bayoumy. "For gardeners, a simple annual weed prevention routine can free up a lot of time."

Start with a clean slate

Early spring is the ideal time to launch a weed prevention program, Bayoumy says. "But it's never too late, or too early, to start. Different types of weeds germinate at different times throughout the growing season: spring, summer and fall."

First, remove existing weeds to start with a clean slate. The old garden proverb that "one year's seeds yield seven years' weeds" is based on the ability of many mature weeds to produce tens of thousands of seeds - per plant, per season. There are weed killers, but even dead weeds need to be removed if you don't want unsightly brown patches in the garden. So you may find it cheaper and easier to simply remove existing weeds by hand.

Mulch is the first line of defense

Weed seeds begin to grow when exposed to light. Even a miniscule flash of sunlight is enough to activate them. A 3-inch layer of mulch helps block light and retain moisture, keeps soil and plant roots cooler, adds organic matter and a nice tidy look to the garden. Popular mulches include shredded wood bark, cocoa hulls and pine straw.

Stop weeds before they start

Mulch deals with weed seeds in the soil, but the mulch itself may contain seeds, plus new seeds are continually carried into mulch and garden soil by wind, birds or animals. For a "one-two punch" against sprouting seeds in the top layer of soil and mulch, apply Preen weed preventer on top of mulch. Once watered in to activate, it bonds to soil particles and is effective for three to four months, before biodegrading. It does not wash away or leach into groundwater.

The campaign continues

As different weeds' seeds germinate throughout the growing season, it's good to refresh mulch and weed preventer as needed in mid-summer or early fall to keep the prevention barrier at full force. Next spring, restart your weed prevention routine. Following an annual anti-weed routine can result in considerably fewer weeds over time. And time is what it's all about: no weeds, no time wasted weeding!

Market Updates

Consumers Didn’t Lose Their Nerve in March

Unemployment is falling and the stock market is up – but gas prices are rising and home prices are declining. Despite the mixed economic signals, Americans continued to be upbeat in March according to the Conference Board’s Consumer Conference Index.

New-Home Sales Drop in February, but Average Price Rises

Sales of new U.S. homes fell in February for the second straight month, a reminder that despite strong job growth and other improvements, the housing market still has some weaknesses. The Commerce Department said recently that new-home sales dropped 1.6 percent last month.

Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th occurs one to three times a year, when the 13th falls on a Friday

2012: January, April, July

Are you superstitious? Then, Friday the 13th is a day you may look forward to with fear! Friday the 13th, is an unlucky day, a day when bad things can happen. Whatever you do, don't walk under a ladder, and don't let a black cat cross your path on this day.

Friday the 13th Trivia:

Many buildings and skyscrapers do not have a 13th floor.
Many people will not allow 13 people at the table. If there is exactly 13 people present, a second table is set up.
Skippers would not go out to sea with a crew of 12. Including the captain, that made 13 people.
Ancient Mayans of Central America were the most advanced culture in all of the Americas. They considered the number 13 sacred.

Origin of Friday the 13th:
In biblical references, it is believed that Cain killed Abel on Friday the 13th. We are not sure how this was determined, as calendars were unlikely to have been in existence back then.

We do know with certainty, the ancient Babylonian Code of Hammurah omitted the #13 in it's list of laws. Written in 1,700 B.C., it suggests ancient Babylonians considered the #13 to be unlucky.

Income taxes due (most years it is due on the 15th)

Portland Celebrates Greek Sister City Mytilene

Portland Celebrates Greek Sister City Mytilene

This week, an oak display case on the second floor in Portland City Hall was dedicated in honor the Greek Sister City relationship between Portland and Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. The case was constructed locally with the support of community donors organized by the Hellenic Society of Maine, and joins other cases that honor Portland’s three other Sister Cities. 2012 presents a special opportunity to show our friendship to our Sister City. It is the 100th anniversary year of the liberation of the City of Mytilene and Lesvos Island from Ottoman rule.

Portes (“Doors”), an exhibition of approximately fifty works on paper by Portland artists will travel to Mytilene in June 2012. Portes is a collaboration between Hellenic Society of Maine and Tetra Projects, and has been recognized as an official Sister City event by the governments of Portland and Mytilene. The show will be on view during Portland’s First Friday Art Walk April 6 in Space Gallery Annex at 538 Congress Street. Portes is the Greek word for "doors" and the title reflects the cultural importance of seaports and cultural exchange in both Mytilene and Portland. The exhibition is a survey of works on paper by fifty Portland-area artists, including drawing, painting, collage, photography, printmaking and mixed media works by emerging and established artists. Portes opens in Greece with a state reception on Friday, June 8, and runs through June 14. It will be exhibited in the upper gallery of the Public Theater on the quay in downtown Mytilene during events celebrating the 100th anniversary.

These events are a part of an effort to support the Sister City mission of cultural exchange and goodwill between the citizens of Greece and the United States, and provides an exciting opportunity for an international exhibition by Maine artists. It is hoped that a similar exhibition will travel to Portland’s other Sister Cities in the future, and that Portland will host reciprocal exhibits.

About the Portland/Mytilene Sister City Relationship

Portland, Maine, and Mytilene, Lesvos, became Sister Cities in 2003. The formal vote by the Portland City Council on the Sister City Resolution was held on Monday, October 20, in Council Chambers. A reciprocal visit by a Portland delegation to Mytilene took place in June of 2004.

The Sister City relationship was suggested by members of the Hellenic Society of Maine, and has continued to be supported by the group. The purpose of the Sister City relationship is to promote world peace and international cooperation by establishing close and continuous ties between two world communities that already have several strong connections and much in common.

Both cities are located on the sea, in the northeast corner of their countries, in areas known for being environmentally clean, green and beautiful. Both are ports and are the economic, cultural, medical and legal centers of their region. Both have an important, growing university and other schools that give them a young and vibrant feel and a talented workforce. Both were established early in their country's history, and are associated with historic and modern artistic and literary talent. Both are in areas that rely on tourism and natural resources for a good portion of their economy, and whose people are known for their independent spirits.

Portland Celebrates Community Development Week

Starting Monday April 9th, the City of Portland will commemorate National Community Development Week with a series of events beginning with a press conference at City Hall with City of Portland Mayor Michael Brennan and Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) recipients who will highlight projects that have helped make Portland a livable community and reasons why funding cuts threaten Portland neighborhoods. Other events scheduled for the week include an informational session to educate the public about the city’s first time home owner and housing rehabilitation programs, a ribbon cutting ceremony for two newly constructed basketball courts in East Bayside, last fall NBA fan favorite Glen Davis helped break ground for the project, and a guided CDBG and HOME walking tour to see and learn about funded projects and hear what is planned for the future.

Established in 1994, HUD’s HOME program was designed to create affordable housing for low-income households by empowering people and communities to create and implement strategies tailored to their specific priorities. The program funds the rehabilitation of income eligible owner-occupied properties with up to four units for as much as $15,000 per unit, and multi-family properties occupied by income eligible tenants. Eligible applicants may receive a forgivable loan, a low interest payable loan at zero to three percent, or a combination of a forgivable loan and a payable loan. Appropriate financing terms will be tailored to an individual applicant’s ability to pay. Deferred payment loans of up to $30,000 are also available for first time homebuyers for down payment assistance and other eligible costs for individuals and families purchasing their first home. Applicants can receive a free heat loss analysis by a Maine Certified Energy Auditor.

The CDBG program provides federal funds to the City of Portland for projects that ensure access to affordable housing, provide services to the city’s most vulnerable, and create jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses. The CDBG program has funded playgrounds at Fox Street, Stone Street, Deering Oaks, Reiche and East End Community Schools; trees throughout the peninsula; Community Policing; numerous sidewalks to improve walk ability within the city, plus landmarks such as the St. Lawrence Church, Abyssinian Meeting House and the Maine Irish Heritage Center.

Four Easy Steps to Jump-Start Outdoor Spring Cleaning

If the warmer temperatures, bright sunshine and greening of spring give you the urge to clean, you're not alone. If you want to make spring cleaning easier, especially outdoor spring cleaning, a little planning will save lots of elbow grease.

Make outdoor spring cleaning a breeze with these four simple tips to ensure that you're ready for warm weather fun:

1. Get the grill ready - Barbecues and picnics are as much a part of summer as baseball and trips to the beach. Your grill is central to the fun when you're cooking and dining outdoors, so get it ready with a good cleaning. If you were diligent about cleaning the grill after every use last year, a good cleaning with a wire brush may be all the cooking grates need. If your grates have a lot of build-up and burnt-on food, remove and soak them in warm soapy water to loosen the debris. Use a wire brush and a little soapy water to clean out the inside surfaces of your grill, including the inside of the lid. Check the hose connection for the propane tank and repair or replace it if needed.

2. Clean outdoor surfaces without scrubbing - Over time, wood and composite decks, concrete, railings, awnings and outdoor furniture can accumulate mold, moss, mildew and algae. An environmentally-sensitive mold and mildew cleaner like Wet & Forget works over time to gently remove outdoor stains on virtually any exterior surface without scrubbing. Perfect for mildew and mold removal, the non-caustic, non-acidic and bleach-free, biodegradable formula can be easily applied with a pump garden sprayer instead of a more labor-intense power washer. The multi-surface outdoor cleaner reduces water usage and is designed for use around landscaping plants.

3. Spruce up your view - Clean windows not only brighten the interior of your home, they can make the exterior look fresher, too. Spring is a great time to remove screens (if you haven't stored them for the winter) and give them a good cleaning. Hosing them off should do the trick, but if they're very dirty try cleaning with a little soapy water and a soft scrub brush. Before you replace the screens, give the windows a good cleaning. Arm yourself with lots of paper towels and a good glass cleaner. One that contains vinegar will be effective and eco-friendly if you're concerned about exposing your landscaping to harsh chemicals. Be sure to clean the outside of your windows first. It will make another popular spring cleaning chore - washing the inside of windows - a bit easier.

4. Taking care of your tools - Yard work and gardening are realities of warm weather. All your landscaping maintenance chores will be easier if your tools are clean and in good repair. Unload the tool shed or garage of all the equipment you'll use this summer - from rakes and hoes to lawn mowers and trimmers. While you probably cleaned your garden tools before you stored them for winter, they'll still have accumulated dust - and possibly rust - from sitting idle for so many months. Clean rust spots and dirt from metal tools, and use a coating of mineral oil to ensure the rust doesn't return. Clean lawn mower and trimmer blades, and replace the line on string trimmers. Get blades sharpened if necessary, and run through all the maintenance tasks recommended in the manufacturer's handbook for your power equipment.
